Groundhog in the Garden

It must be a good week for wild critter sightings, for Husband came home this morning to eat breakfast and saw this out in the garden: (in the first row with the lettuce)

A groundhog cheerfully eating our tender lettuce plants! O.o

There is an expedient way to keep the garden safe from the local wildlife:

I dislike that such a thing must be done, but how can I be a good steward of my family's food supply if wild critters eat it first? I'm very glad that Husband was home to do it. He says groundhog is good eating, but there isn't time to butcher it this week - the tender young herbivore will be a treat for the wilder things that lurk in the back field. (Steady on, stomach. It's just late-pregnancy nausea. O.o)
