American Bento

Today has been slow and grey and rainy. I spent most of the morning tidying the kitchen and playing with the Boy, until his nap. I feel a little restless today, and I have an itch to do something creative - so I sat at my sewing desk and was looking over the list I'd made last year of what I could or wanted to make to enter in the State Fair. I had barely turned to the page in my notebook when Husband called and said he was going to swing by and could I get something for him to take for lunch? Unsure of when exactly he'd pop in (but any time) I flew to make a sandwich - of which I am rather proud - and then as he hadn't come yet I started adding sides. I got a carrot washed and cut...and packed into a lunch container with ranch...handful of grapes washed and dried...deviled eggs from the picnic...and still no Husband. The essentials finished, I started getting creative. Now, maybe it's the novelty of packing Husband's lunch - as he usually comes by and stays to eat - but the end result reminded me of a bento box lunch.

A Ham-Pepperoni-Pimento-JalapeƱo-Cucumber-Onion Sandwich ;)

It's not a true bento, though. I couldn't fit the sandwich into the container; it's really just a packed lunch. :P But I got to be creative in a small and satisfying way and now I'm ready to go back to my sewing desk. :)
