Weathering a Hurricane, Taylor-Style

Fun times at the Big House. We started the festivities with a late-night viewing of "the long" Pride & Prejudice as we awaited the start of the rain. Husband was called in to work the shelter up in town until midnight, and although the plan was that we both sleep here at the Big House, he was too tired to come. As little man and I were already here and very tired, too - it was after 1:00am - we went ahead and stayed.

The wind drove the rain in around 2:00am, and it has been raining all morning since, and has yet to fully hit us. What does the Taylor family do on a rainy, windy, hurricane-y Saturday morning do? Well, it begins with a hearty breakfast, to be sure. I woke BJ "early," as he was the prearranged Kitchen Manager and once he was downstairs, we began our preparations. He was Bacon Cooker, I was Biscuit Maker, and Ma ended up making her famous Cheese Eggs.

As the last skillet of bacon was frying, and the biscuits having just been put in the oven, there was a blip in the power, and suddenly, it was all dark in the kitchen...

There was some debate as to how to finish cooking the food – using the grill or hooking up the generator. The generator won and the menfolk manfully strode out into the rain to fix up the necessary arrangements. The oven was turned back on and as the biscuits cooked, the boys decided to annoy Arwen in the best fashion they knew – banging out a duet of “Heart and Soul” on the piano as loud as they could. :P

The day passed slowly and thoughtfully, with the constant hum of wind and rain outside. We watched movies and had chess matches and read and napped.

Around four-thirty, though, we heard a noise above and ran outside to see this:

I think I laughed rather manically – sort of the laugh to keep from crying sort of thing. What are you going to do when the roof is suddenly gone in the midst of hurricane rain and you see a great ball of tin roofing perched on the top of the house? Laugh like a giddy maniac, and then help move the cars out of the way lest the tin come down upon them. And then run around like a maniac trying to get good pictures of the aforementioned roof. In the aforementioned downpour. :P

God provision in the form of a torn tin roof – a new roof was greatly needed, so God ordained that the insurance would pay for it! (I do still find it just a little bit amusing and very kind of God that our fragile little mobile home escaped the storm entirely unscathed, not one drip or leak or piece missing.)

More pictures from the day:

A "friendly" brother-sister game of chess.

By account it was a good battle, but Mary (as is her habit) triumphed.

One of many diaper changes. :)

Streeeetch! (And make a face.)

The morning repast.

Cuddle time!

The boys scrounged for their lunch... the Steward makes a "Tootle's Special" sandwich.

One of many naps... one of the only ones without a warm shoulder to lay on. (He didn't stay there long.)

Chanting Mother Goose rhymes ...as fast as possible.
